The 2018 College Football regular season has come to an end and now it is onto the postseason. On Sunday, December 2nd the official College Football Playoff bracket was finally announced and Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma were the four schools who were selected to play in the playoff.
The College Football Playoff started in 2014 when the NCAA decided to change the National Championship format from the top two teams playing in a championship to the top 4 teams playing in a mini bracket with two semi-final games and one championship game.
As it has been in every year of the playoff the committee had to make tough decisions on who truly were the top four teams in the country. Going into Sunday the committee had to decide between three teams for the final spot in the playoff.
Alabama, Clemson, and Notre Dame all went undefeated in 2018 and were undoubtedly going to be put in the playoff by the committee. The fourth and final spot was not an easy decision though. The committee needed to decide between Oklahoma, Georgia, and Ohio State and they ended up picking Oklahoma as the fourth and final team.
The College Football Playoff committee has one main goal and that goal is to choose the four best teams and have them compete for their chance to win the National Championship. But this year the committee is under major scrutiny for choosing Oklahoma as their fourth team since many people in America believe that team should have been Georgia.
Georgia played in their conference championship against the number one ranked team Alabama but after having the lead for the majority of the game they ended up falling short as the Alabama Crimson Tide had a historic comeback. After the loss, the Georgia Bulldogs were a 2 loss team but both of their losses were to highly ranked opponents.
In comparison, the Oklahoma Sooners won their championship game against the University of Texas which avenged their loss to them earlier in the season. Oklahoma’s resume now had them beating every single opponent they faced and their record is now 12-1. Oklahoma had the best offense in the NCAA all year but had one of the worst defenses as well.
This debate could go on and on but one of the main reasons Georgia did not get the fourth spot was because they had two losses. Although those two losses were to teams who are ranked in the top 10 the committee thought that Georgia was not as worthy as Oklahoma was.
With the games finally being announced, Alabama will play Oklahoma in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Saturday, December 29th and Clemson will play Notre Dame in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl on December 29th as well. The winner of both games will play each other in the National Championship.
Alabama has been dominant all year and will be a tough test for the high-powered Oklahoma offense. Oklahoma’s defense has been absent during most games but it would be smart if they decided to show up against the Crimson Tide on the 29th. Oklahoma’s offense will keep them in the game but if they are going to win the game their defense will need to step up and make some key stops all game. But that is easier said than done when you’re playing Alabama and this game will easily be the toughest game so far this season for Oklahoma.
In the other game, long time rivals Clemson and Notre Dame will be facing off but this time the stage will be larger than ever. Both teams come into the game undefeated and on a roll. Clemson had a similar schedule as Notre Dame but many people believe the Clemson Tigers are a far better team. Going into the game the Tigers are 11.5 point favorites to win the game.
The College Football Playoff has proven to be some of the most entertaining college football games ever played and many people are looking forward to seeing what will happen in this year’s playoff. 2018 has been one of the most exciting seasons so far and I am excited to see how this year's playoff will pan out.
