Super Bowl LIII

By Colin Dixon February 6th, 2019
What may have been a boring game to you may have been super exciting to many others. The NFL has become a league dominated by offense and defense plays less of a role in the outcome in the game. But what does everyone say "Defense wins championships."

But yeah it may have been the worst Super Bowl I have ever seen. Sadly I saw it with my own eyes. I was lucky enough to attend one of the biggest sporting events in the world, but there were no fireworks at all during the game... only during the halftime show which was... just okay.

Back to the game, Super Bowl LIII it was a defensive battle with little to no offense by either team. Going into halftime it was 3-0 and the final score was 13-3.

Before the game if you told the Rams they would hold Tom Brady and the Patriots to 13 points you would have thought they won the game. But that was far from it.

The Rams offense was awful and did not even get to the red zone once. The Patriots game plan was to leave the game in Jared Goff's hands and they did just that. And what did he do... nothing.

Goff went 19-38 with 229 yards passing. And his one shot at a wide-open touchdown, he threw the ball too late and on top of that decided to float the ball in instead of throwing a bullet to a wide-open Brandin Cooks in the endzone.

On top of that Todd Gurley, the league leading scorer got 10 carries for only 35 yards. How did the Rams expect to win the game with only giving Gurley the ball once? I get it they did not even have the ball enough to give him it more.

At the end of the day, Coach Sean McVay got out-coached and Goff is not good under pressure.

On the other side of the ball, the Rams defense was pretty solid. They put pressure on Brady enough to wear the Patriots were only in the red zone for one play the entire game.

My key for the Rams defense was to stop the run and that will lead to Brady to have to make plays. The Rams only held the Patriots to 154 yards on the ground but in big situations, they were not able to stop Sony Michel or Rex Burkhead from breaking off big runs.

Brady was far from stellar during the game only going 21 for 35 on his pass attempts. That is not too shabby but most of his passes were little dump offs or even behind his receivers and they were forced to make plays.

Julian Edelman was a major force for the Patriots offense. The Rams could not figure out how to cover him until the 4th quarter. He had 10 catches for 141 yards and was left open on many plays leading to easy completions for Brady.

If you said this game was boring you do not appreciate defense. Both teams were held to only 3 3rd down conversions and both teams have high powered offenses that looked weak.

But it came down to Tom Brady being the Tom Brady that we all know, and he was clutch as usual and now he has 6 rings which are more than any other quarterback to play the game. Although I do not want to say that it is true he is the best player to ever play the game of football.

But as a Rams fan, I was excited to see them make it this far and make it into this game. I was blessed enough to be able to witness history with my own eyes even though they lost.

There is always next year for the Rams and I expect to see them back in the Super Bowl next year with all the returning talent they have. And on top of that, they have a ton of experience to help them in big situations like this in the future.
